Typographic Portrait

For my Data Portrait assignment in my class, I was pretty much tasked to make a metaphorical portrait of myself in any way I see fit. The way I see it, portraits are not just a visage of the subject, but an examination of the self by others. So, to put the "Data" in "Data Portrait", I spread a link to an anonymous survey among people on my contacts telling them to write 5 words or phrases that they think define me in their eyes. I even encouraged them to put at least one negative or not-positive thing about me, which still rarely happened even though it was anonymous (I don't want constant praise, I want to hear about my flaws. I know I'm not a perfect person). I even got someone who apparently hated me and put "insults" in the 5 spaces. I use that in quotations since I didn't really consider it to be insults; it was a really bad attempt to offend me or something. Despite their immaturity, I even put their responses in there (minus 1 profanity in their response). I put every word I received in this portrait ,as well as a few of my own (both positive and negative based on others possible perspectives), whether I agreed with them or not. The result is mostly praise from those who answered the survey, but some controversial and contradictory statements. It doesn't surprise me that some people consider me a controversial figure.

This project was very new and exciting to me. I've always wanted to make a typographic work, though not quite like this. Still, I'm fairly happy with how this turned out. I learned a lot about how to make typographic work and it was a real interesting piece to work with.
